Meghan Markle is a breath of fresh air. Not only is she a women's rights advocate, she's also subtly but effectively bringing the royal family into the 21st century.

The duchess' surprise appearance at the British Fashion Awards caused a bit of a stir on social media because her nail polish broke with royal tradition.

Judging by the photos, Meghan opted for a black or rouge noir shade of nail polish to match her one-shoulder black gown. Per People magazine, black nail varnish is "a rare choice" for members of the royal family. The Queen's go-to colour is Essie's Ballet Slippers, which she's been using 1989 when the royal hairdresser declared it "the only colour Her Majesty would wear."
